Background

Ben came to Asbury four years ago after spending some time as a carpenter. Looking for a change, he found the perfect place to grow at Asbury and hasn’t looked back since.

Current Role

Ben’s days involve a varied mix of plumbing jobs, from fixing leaky taps to installing complex thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs). While building his plumbing expertise, he’s also working towards his thermal gas qualification. This involves hands-on learning by assisting experienced gas engineers on the job.

Recently, Ben gained valuable experience on a commercial project at the Greenhouse Christian Hotel. This allowed him to put his skills to the test in a larger-scale setting, helping him adapt to the challenges of commercial plumbing.

Skills Developed

Ben is a quick learner who’s always eager to pick up new skills by observing his colleagues. He’s especially inspired by Tony, Asbury’s most experienced engineer. Watching Tony’s careful approach to measurements has helped Ben develop a keen eye for detail in his own work.

Ben has also learned how essential happy clients are to a business’s success. He takes the time to listen carefully to their needs, explaining things clearly so they feel confident and satisfied with the work. This approach helps build strong, lasting relationships with customers.

Company Culture

Ben describes the company culture at Asbury as both positive and supportive. He appreciates the camaraderie with his colleagues, with regular team outings and activities (like the upcoming go-karting event) helping to build a strong sense of community. This collaborative environment makes Ben feel comfortable asking questions, learning from his peers, and contributing his own ideas.

He also recognises the company’s commitment to employee growth. Asbury has encouraged him to pursue additional qualifications and has provided opportunities to expand his skillset, making him feel valued and supported in his career journey.

Future Aspirations

Ben is eager to build on his skills by completing his domestic gas qualification shortly, followed by the commercial gas qualification. This will equip him to tackle more challenging projects. He’s also passionate about renewable energy and plans to gain relevant qualifications. Asbury’s commitment to sustainability aligns with Ben’s own interests, making this a natural path for his future growth.

Advice for Aspiring Apprentices

If you’re thinking about a career in commercial heating, Ben suggests getting stuck in with small tasks around the house. Start by tinkering with tools – much like he did with bikes and scooters as a child – as this hands-on experience is a great way to develop a keen interest in how things work and build a solid base for an apprenticeship.
