What do the Winter Fuel Repayments Mean For Care Home Residents?

How Much Heating Bill Support Can Those Living In Care Homes Expect To Receive?

As a result of the recent energy bill hike, the Government has announced additional heating bill support for those who fit a certain criteria for winter 2022/23. This includes those who currently reside in care homes. Note that those who have lived in a care home for the whole time from 27th June to 25th September 2022 will not qualify.

The amount of additional support a person living in a care home receives depends on the year they were born and whether they or their partner is currently receiving any Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance, or income related Employment and Support Allowance.

The Government website details the following support for care home residents:

  • Residents born between 26th September 1942 and 25th September 1956 receive £250
  • Residents born on or before 25th September 1942 receive £300

Bear in mind that if that resident or their partner receives Pension Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support, they will not qualify for the additional support.

How Will The Government Pay Those Living In Care Homes Entitled To The Support?

Those entitled will receive a letter letting them know how much support they’ll receive. According to the Government website, most payments will be made automatically in November or December. For those who don’t receive their payments in November or December, payments should be made directly into the entitled person’s bank account by 13th January 2023. You can find out more information on the Winter Fuel Repayment and how it works on the Government website.

What Does The Additional Support Mean For Care Homes Themselves?

With the funds going straight into the account of the resident who’s entitled to the support, care homes themselves, unfortunately, won’t benefit directly. The additional support can help those who may be affected by any increase in care home fees due to the rising energy costs.
